An expansion valve, including electronic expansion valves (EXVs), plays a crucial role in the refrigeration cycle of chiller units. Its primary function is to control the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator coil, regulating the amount of liquid refrigerant that enters the coil to ensure optimal cooling efficiency. Here's how an expansion valve works in chiller units:

  1. High-Pressure, High-Temperature Refrigerant: After leaving the compressor, the refrigerant is in a high-pressure, high-temperature state.

Entering the Condenser: The high-pressure, high-temperature refrigerant flows into the condenser coil, where it releases heat to the surrounding air or water, causing it to condense into a high-pressure liquid.

2.Pressure Drop Across the Expansion Valve: The high-pressure liquid refrigerant then passes through the expansion valve. The expansion valve creates a pressure drop, causing the refrigerant to undergo a phase change from a high-pressure liquid to a low-pressure, low-temperature liquid-gas mixture.

3.Lower Pressure and Temperature in the Evaporator: As the refrigerant enters the evaporator coil, it is in a low-pressure, low-temperature state. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the chilled water or air passing over the evaporator coil, causing it to evaporate into a low-pressure gas.

4.Return to the Compressor: The low-pressure gas is then drawn back into the compressor, where the cycle begins again. The expansion valve is critical in regulating the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator coil. In traditional mechanical expansion valves, the opening is controlled by a diaphragm or thermal element that responds to temperature changes in the evaporator coil. In electronic expansion valves (EXVs), electronic controls adjust the valve opening based on various system parameters such as temperature and pressure. This electronic control allows for precise modulation of the refrigerant flow, optimizing the system's efficiency and performance under varying load conditions.

5.Overall, the expansion valve ensures that the right amount of refrigerant enters the evaporator coil, facilitating efficient heat exchange and maintaining the desired temperature in the chilled space.
